Carlsbad Caverns National Park really is a national treasure, with a remarkable 117 known caves hidden beneath the rugged landscape. Above the ground is a landscape filled with rocky slopes, canyons, thorny shrubs, cactus, grass and maybe even the odd tree or two, but below there is an underground world just waiting for you to explore.  The largest cave of all, the Big Room (very aptly named – it covers more than 8 acres and is wheelchair accessible in some areas) is the place where you should start your tour – you’ll end up with a real crick in your neck, and that’s a promise. Then why not venture further afield to the Spider Cave (if you dare) or the Hall of the White Giant for a guided tour. There’s plenty to do above ground too, with plenty of hiking and camping opportunities.

Carlsbad Caverns National Park isn’t only popular with people either, it’s home to an amazing 400,000 Brazilian bats, but do not be afraid, they eat several tons of bugs every night, making the experience more pleasant for all concerned.
