Directions to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is on the island of Hawaii – no surprises there then. Once you’ve reached the island of Hawaii (don’t worry, we’ll get to that in a minute)  – this is where you need to head.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park from Hilo – travel southwest for around 30 miles on Highway 11 – it’ll only take around 45 minutes.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park from Kailua-Kona – travel southeast for around 96 miles on Highway 11 – it should take around 2 or 2 and a half hours, alternatively . . . take Highways 19 and 11 for a 125 mile journey through Waimea and Hilo, it’ll take you between 2 and a half to three hours for this route.

Flying to Hawaii Island

The closest airport and large city to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is Hilo, which is served by many international airlines.

United/Continental airlines fly daily from Los Angeles to Hilo.

Air Canada, Delta, American, Hawaiian, Japan, Northwest, United/Continental, US Airways/America West all have direct flights straight into Kona.

Kona and Hilo airports are also served by various inter-island carriers, Island Air, go Hawaiian, Pacific Wings and Mokulele.

Once you land at the airport it’s easy enough to pick up a hire car and continue your journey onwards to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

Public Transport to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

At various points around the island of Hawaii, you’ll also be able to pick up some public transport for your journey to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. There’s a public bus service, taxis, motorcycles, commercial tour buses and bicycles are also available.
