Katmai National Park & Preserve is famous for brown bears, volcanoes, fish filled waterways (no wonder the bears like living there), a rugged coastline and miles of wilderness. What more could you want from a national park? The Katmai National Monument was actually created way back in 1918 as a means of preserving the famous Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes – this has nothing to do with cigarettes or even a peace pipe – it’s all about the ash flow which was deposited by the eruption of Novarupta Volcano – 40 square miles of it, up to 700 feet thick, making this place pretty unique by anybodies standards.

Katmai National Park & Preserve is a fantastic place to visit, learn a little about the history of the area and culture of the people who made it their home for thousands of years. It’s a great place to camp out and get away from it all for a few days, take a hike, relax with a little hunting and fishing or take a boat ride. The weather is very often wet and stormy, but you might get a little sunshine too. Strong winds are frequent in the area, so you really do need to be prepared for that – lots of layers, and waterproofs, that should sort it.

Aren’t they great? I could stand and watch them all day long, and I’m sure that many people do . . .

Yes, more bears – well, it is one of the main attractions and they are so cute . . .
