Mammoth Cave National Park preserves one of the worlds longest known cave systems, in the Green River Valley of Kentucky. There are more than 390 miles of caves – and that’s only the ones which have been explored so far!  It earns the name Mammoth Cave not because of hairy pre-historic elephant type creatures, but because these caves are MAMMOTH (check out the piccy).

Mammoth Cave National Park is sure to leave you with a crick in your neck, remember, the tites come down and the mites go up . . . cheeky! If you fancy spending a few days in this wonderland then there are camp sites available, with varying degrees of “back to natureness” . There are three camping sites which are developed and “proper” as well as loads of back country ones available for those who don’t mind roughing it.  There’s lots to do at Mammoth Cave National Park which isn’t underground you know – there are more than 70 miles of hikers trails making this place something of a paradise if you’re that way inclined. They are also suitable for bikes and horseback riders.

Mammoth Cave National Park is perfectly placed to take advantage of Kentucky’s mild climate – in Kentucky!  Summers are warm, winters are cool, it’s often wetter in spring and summer and pretty dry in the fall, but as with most other National Parks in America, it’s best to be prepared for all weathers.

I know some of the film is a bit dark, but they are in a cave you know . . .
