City Of Rocks National Reserve was a famous landmark for the California bound immigrants of the mid 1800’s.  Some of the amazing granite pinnacles are more than sixty stories high – no wonder it’s renowned for being one of the best rock climbing locations in the world. There are more than 700 routes to date, mostly on the spires which range from 100 feet to an incredible 300 feet. In the winter there are great opportunities for ice climbing too. Some of this granite is more than 2.5 billion years old, yes, billion (not sure how many zero’s that should be), the oldest rocks in the Western United States.

City of Rocks National Reserve fortunately has plenty to offer for those who don’t necessary have a “head for heights” – biking, hiking, horseback riding, hunting, admiring the wildlife and the abundance of flora and fauna are all great ways to spend your visit at the City of Rocks National Reserve.

City of Rocks National Reserve has a climate which is pretty conducive to outdoor activities for much of the year, the summers are pretty dry but watch out for potential thunderstorms in July and August. You don’t want to get caught out halfway up a granite spire do you?
